Reception

Polam Reception welcomes children aged 4 to 5 into a caring, structured environment where confidence, independence, and a love of learning continue to grow.

Where play meets purposeful learning

Reception builds on the strong foundations children bring with them. Learning remains active and engaging, while gentle structure is introduced through daily reading, writing, and maths. As confidence grows, children begin to take greater ownership of their learning in a calm, supportive environment.

    Confidence to try

We help children develop a positive attitude to learning by celebrating effort, progress, and perseverance. Creative subjects, discussion, and hands-on learning encourage children to share ideas, take pride in their work, and believe in their own abilities.

  • Resilience

    Ready for challenge

Outdoor learning, PE, and extra-curricular activities give children space to challenge themselves, solve problems, and keep going when things feel tricky. These experiences build independence, stamina, and confidence, supporting both wellbeing and learning across the curriculum.

Curriculum

At Polam, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the structure for learning, but children always come first. By focusing on wellbeing, confidence, and feeling secure, we create the conditions where children are ready to learn, concentrate, and succeed.

Through a balanced mix of play, exploration, and purposeful teaching, children develop strong foundations in communication, reading, writing, and maths. This thoughtful start supports long-term academic success while nurturing happy, confident learners.

7. Curriculum

The EYFS is made up of Three Prime Areas of Learning:

  • Communication & Language

Children develop listening, speaking, and understanding skills through stories, discussions, and play.
  • Physical Development

Focus on movement, coordination, and healthy habits to build strength and confidence.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children learn to manage emotions, build friendships, and develop independence.

There are Four Specific Areas of Learning which are:

  • Literacy

Encouraging a love for reading and writing through phonics, storytelling, and early writing practice.
  • Maths

Introducing numbers, patterns, shapes, and problem-solving in fun, practical ways.
  • Understanding of the World

Exploring people, places, nature, and technology to make sense of the world around them.
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Inspiring creativity through art, music, movement, and imaginative play.

Swimming as part of school life

Swimming is part of the weekly timetable at Polam, taught in our own warm, indoor pool. Lessons are carefully planned to help children feel confident, safe, and comfortable in the water from an early age.

Swimming follows the Swim England Learn to Swim framework, with children working towards Duckling Awards as they develop independence in the water. Through gentle progression, children learn to float, travel, submerge, and move confidently, building skills at a pace that feels right for them.

As well as developing an essential life skill, swimming supports physical development, confidence, and resilience – helping children feel proud of what they can achieve.
