Reception

A fun and challenging learning environment for ages 4 - 5

Our 4-5 year olds continue to learn through their experiences, however their day becomes more structured with daily literacy and maths sessions. As the year progresses they extend their reading, writing and mathematical skills.

Wellbeing, PE and Swimming all form part of their weekly timetable and are taught by specialist teachers.

Underpinning all our learning is careful assessment and monitoring of progress. This continues from Nursery into Reception and allows staff to extend and scaffold learning when required.

How we encourage a love of learning

Early Literacy and Numeracy

After starting to learn these skills in our Preschool, Reception stage marks the beginning of more structured learning, with a focus on early literacy and numeracy skills. Through interactive lessons and play-based activities, we ignite a passion for reading, writing, and mathematical exploration.

Social Skills and Team Building

Reception is a crucial time for developing social skills. Our pupils engage in collaborative activities that promote teamwork, communication, and empathy, setting the stage for positive relationships with peers and teachers.

Creative Expression

The Reception years at Polam emphasise creative expression. From art projects to imaginative play, we encourage children to express themselves freely, fostering a love for the arts and nurturing their unique talents.

Outdoor Learning Adventures

In Reception, we embrace the great outdoors as an extension of our classroom. Through outdoor learning activities, children develop gross motor skills, connect with nature, and experience the joy of learning in a dynamic and engaging environment.

Curriculum

The statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the guidance and requirements supporting the learning and development of children in our care.

The Framework describes the stages for the development of children (from birth to 5 years of age) and how children’s health, well-being and safety are our priority within an environment that provides opportunities to allow them to reach their true potential.

The EYFS is made up of Three Prime Areas of Learning:

There are Four Specific Areas of Learning which are:

Swimming as part of the curriculum

From Preschool, swimming becomes part of pupils weekly timetable in our own heated, indoor pool.

Their lessons follow the Swim England 'Learn to swim' framework in which they work towards four levels of certification called 'Duckling Awards'.

Each award comes with its own distinctive certificate and badge.

Duckling 1 marks the beginning of independent movement in the water for children. As they progress to Duckling 4, they'll confidently dive in, submerge, float, and travel an impressive 10 meters unaided.

These awards play a crucial role in fostering independence and building water confidence, laying the foundation for success in Stage 1 of the Learn to Swim Framework.

Begin an unforgettable adventure

Our aim at Polam School is to give the children the perfect start. We want to instil a love of learning that will stay with them and prepare them for the next steps.
